Modigliani Girls

Amedio Modigliani, an Italian painter who died in 1920 at the age of 35, inspired this series. He said, Ã¢â‚¬Å“What I am seeking is not the real and not the unreal but rather the unconscious, the mystery of the instinctive in the human race.Ã¢â‚¬Â His art was brave and allowed for access to the unconscious by creating images that bordered on caricatures of his subjects. He found infinite variety and access to wholly different worlds in each face. He lived and worked and died in poverty in Paris. A few days after his death, his pregnant fiancÃƒÂ©e, Jeannne HÃƒÂ©buterne, jumped from her parentsÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ fifth floor flat, leaving behind heir small daughter as an orphan.

When I began painting women with elongated Modigliani necks, something magical happened for me. Freed from my attempts to be precise in portrait painting, I felt I had gained access to the soul, the unconscious being of the woman.
